Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do I print the map?
There are three methods of printing from MERLIN Online. They are presented below, in order of most- to least-recommended.
- Most recommended: Click the print button and choose "HTML Layout".
- This will transfer the map and legend to a new web browser window, which can be printed using the browser's print commands.
- As the map is created, you will be asked to provide an optional title for the map. It is recommended to limit the title to 45 characters or less.
- It is recommended to print the map in landscape orientation, where the page is wider than it is tall. Open the web browser's "File" menu; the "page setup" or "print" commands should allow you to choose the "landscape" orientation.
- Good alternative: Use a screen capture (an image that shows exactly what was displayed on screen) to print. There are specialized programs that can be used for this. Microsoft Windows users can follow the steps below to capture the screen. For more information, view the tutorial on performing screen captures.
- Set up the map browser (TNTclient) window exactly as you want it to look in the print. For example, if there is a measurement you want a print of, make sure the measurement screen is visible.
- On your keyboard, hold down the [ALT] Key and press the [Print Screen] key (may be labeled [PrtScr] or similar), then release both keys.
- Open a software package that has the capability to handle images. This includes most word processors, Microsoft WordPad or Paint, or any painting or drawing program (i.e. Adobe Photoshop or Corel Draw).
- Use the "Paste" command in the software to add the captured image to a document or new graphic.
- If this did not work, repeat steps 1 through 4, with the exception of using the [CTRL] key instead of the [ALT] key in step 2.
- Crop, resize, and/or annotate the image as necessary.
- Use the software's print command to print the image/document.
- Least recommended: Click the print button and choose "Image". This method only works in Internet Explorer, and only if MERLIN Online is set up as a trusted site as outlined below. These steps were determined on a Microsoft Windows version of Internet Explorer; they may be different for other operating systems.
- In Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu and choose Internet Options
- Click the Security tab
- Click the Trusted Sites icon
- Click the Sites button
- Make sure there is no check mark next to "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone"
- In the "Add this Web site to the zone:" field type http://atlas.mdmerlin.net/ then click the Add button
- Click the OK button on the Trusted Sites window
- Click the Custom Level button on the Internet Options window
- In the Security Settings window set Java Permissions to Custom
- Click the Java Custom Settings button
- In the new Trusted Sites window click the Edit Permissions tab and set Printing to Enable, then click the OK button
- Click the OK button on the Security Settings window
- Click the OK button on the Internet Options window
